Fluvial-Deltaic Depositional Systems

Overview:

This course aims to review the fundamentals of fluvial and deltaic depositional systems, as a basis for their sequence stratigraphic evaluation. Examples will be given using modern and ancient analogues (utilising the ERGO system[1]), and special attention paid to recognition of these depositional systems in the subsurface. Once the fundamentals of the sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy are established the implications for play fairway analysis, prospect evaluation and reservoir modelling will be considered.

Contents:

Fluvial Depositional Systems
  • Depositional Processes
  • Classification of Fluvial Depositional Systems
  • Modern and Ancient Analogues
  • Recognition in the Subsurface - Cores, Logs and Seismic
  • Key Petrophysical Characteristics
Deltaic Depositional Systems
  • Depositional Processes
  • Classification of Deltaic Systems: Influence of Waves, Tides and Fluvial Discharge
  • Modern and Ancient Analogues
  • Recognition in the Subsurface - Cores, Logs and Seismic
  • Key Petrophysical Characteristics
Fluvio-Deltaic Sequence Stratigraphy

Once the fundamentals of fluvial and deltaic systems have been established, special attention will be paid to the sequence stratigraphic evaluation of fluvio-deltaic systems, using examples to help define key issues in understanding of sequence architecture in these systems.

Implications for Play Fairway Analysis, Prospect Analysis and Reservoir Modelling

The understanding of fluvio-deltaic systems has applications at all scales. A range of scales of properties will be considered, including:

  • The impact of regional facies trends on play fairway analysis
  • The impact of sandbody geometries on prospect evaluation and reservoir models
  • Petrophysical trends within sandbodies
Practical exercises:

The course will be supported by a detailed exercise entailing the sedimentological and sequence stratigraphic analysis of a fluvio-deltaic sequence (based on petrography, core logs and wireline logs). The exercise could be paper-based or could utilise Powerlog[2] petrophysical log analysis software and Fast Tracker[3] reservoir modelling software to help visualise the exercise datasets (if suitable facilities are available).

  1. ^ ERGO™ is an analogue database that is being created by Fugro Robertson to capture modern and ancient sandbody geometry data from around, as an aid to reservoir modelling.
  2. ^ Powerlog™ is a log analysis package developed by Fugro Jason which will allow the review of petrophysical data from the exercise dataset.
  3. ^ Fast Tracker™ is a reservoir modelling package developed by Fugro Jason which will allow the review of simple stratigraphic models of the fluvio-delatic exercise dataset.
