Reservoir Geochemistry
Who should attend?
Petroleum geologists, reservoir geologists and engineers involved in the assessment of reservoir heterogeneity and connectivity; petroleum exploration geochemists who wish to expand their knowledge into reservoir geochemistry. A working knowledge of organic chemistry would be advantageous but is not essential.
Overview:
Petroleum geochemistry is often regarded as an exploration tool which is of little use to those involved in field appraisal or production. However, the application of reservoir fluid geochemistry to the understanding of discovered fields and in particular to the understanding of reservoir continuity, compartmentalisation and connectivity is an evolving technique of great value. This course, which includes a number of hands-on exercises, is intended to promote confidence in the application of petroleum geochemistry techniques to reservoir scale problems.
Content:
Introduction to general concepts
- Reservoir fluid properties and characteristics
- Rate and mechanism of reservoir filling and mixing
- Engineering versus geochemical nomenclature
- Hydrocarbons and non-hydrocarbons
- Relationship of hydrocarbon composition to petroleum properties
- Analytical methods
- Tested oil
Interpreting gas chromatograms and GC-MS; non-hydrocarbons/interpretation; application to reservoir continuity/connectivity - Gas
Non-hydrocarbon gases (compositions/sources); hydrocarbon compositions/interpretations; isotope studies - Water
API analysis; Stiff diagrams; action on reservoir matrix; effect on hydrocarbon composition/petroleumproperties; water in sub-surface (variations/perturbations) - Residual oil
