Global Positioning and Surveying
Who should attend?
The course is designed for personnel who use marine and survey services based upon global positioning systems and their need to understand the capabilities and limitations of such systems.
Overview:
The course will introduce the concept of subsea acoustic positioning, GPS and DGPS, derivation of coordinate systems and the practical application of tides and tidal datums commonly in use in the marine geoscience & geomatics industry. These methods and their applications are described with reference to which techniques are appropriate for different requirements. The course also deals with spatially-referenced data (for example maps/charts, CAD drawings, survey reports, including depth specific datums) and their necessity in marine positioning applications.
Content:
- Acoustic positioning techniques and signal propagation
- Short, ultra short and long baseline systems
- Accuracy of acoustic techniques and positioning solutions
- Operational considerations and acoustic positioning applications
- The Geoid and the map projection process
- Map projections, coordinate systems and datums
- Satellite navigation systems and GPS
