Quantitative pore size distribution

Image analysis at the thin section scale is a technique offered by Fugro Robertson which, in addition to standard petrographic techniques, gives a detailed quantitative assessment of pore geoemetries and connectivity within the studied section.

Image analysis using advanced backscatter and petrographic techniques

Using a combination of thin section, SEM and, in particular backscattered electron (BSE) analysis, high resolution 'grey scale' digital images are manipulated using a variety of software packages (including Image Tools and Envi). This process can be used to digitally distinguish meso/micropores (including small pores, pore ends and pore throats) from larger intergranular and secondary dissolution macropores. Data gathered by this process is then analysed by a series of cross-plots and histograms which give a quantitative assessment of pore size, pore distribution and the degree of pore connectivity, together with an accurate indication of the effectiveness of the pore system.
