Geological Evaluation of the Kurdistan Region, Northern Iraq

01 June 2008

An ArcGIS product delivering revised geological, structural and framework data for use in the petroleum geological evaluation of the Kurdistan region, northern Iraq. The aim of the study is to provide regional geological data in a fully attributed ArcGIS format that will include significantly revised digital geological maps, regional palaeogeographic coverage and a detailed summary of the stratigraphic and structural evolution of the region. Reservoir risk is considered to be a critical play factor in the Kurdistan region, northern Iraq, and the reservoirs are dominated by fractured carbonates. In this context, understanding of the timing, nature and geographic distribution of deformation of the region is essential. It is also considered a necessary precursor to the more detailed fracture analysis required at the field level.

The use of satellite data, access to previous reports and geological maps and a suite of recently collected outcrop samples will aid ground truthing. The deliverable for this element of the study will be a fully attributed, significantly updated and quality controlled digital geological map for the study area. Other deliverables will include a stratigraphic review, palaeogeographic maps, plate configuration, play montages, potential trapping style maps and petroleum systems events charts. This study was completed in May 2008.
